A service visit checks the air pump, diffusers, alarm, control panel, chlorinator or disinfection unit, and sludge levels, and costs about $150 to $300. Many homes use a yearly maintenance contract, about $250 to $500.
An aerobic treatment unit, or ATU, is a septic system with a motor. An air pump pushes oxygen into the tank so aerobic bacteria can break down waste much faster than in a regular tank. The cleaner water lets ATUs work on lots where a conventional drain field would not, which is why you see them on smaller lots and near the springs.
The trade-off is upkeep. In Florida, an ATU needs an operating permit and a maintenance agreement with an approved maintenance entity, and it must be inspected on a regular schedule. If the air pump stops, the bacteria die and the unit starts acting like a poor regular septic tank.
Call for ATU service if the alarm is sounding or the light is on, the air pump is silent or humming without blowing air, the water in the tank smells like rotten eggs, or the sprinkler heads (on spray systems) are not running. These signs mean the unit is not treating wastewater.
We service most common residential ATU brands found in Marion County. Here are the visits and repairs Ocala homeowners call us for most.

A full ATU visit takes about 45 minutes to an hour. We check every powered part, test the alarm, look at the water, and leave you a written report for your records and the state.
Repair or replace the part that failed, not the whole unit. Air pumps, floats, timers, and alarms are designed to be swapped. A full ATU replacement is only needed when the tank itself is cracked or the unit is so old that parts are no longer made.
Air pumps usually last several years. When an older pump starts to weaken, replacing it before it dies saves you from a dead unit and an odor problem. We carry common aerators on the truck so most alarm calls end with the unit running again.
Never open the control panel with the power on, and never reach into an ATU tank. Turn the breaker off only if you smell burning or see water in the panel. Most alarms can be silenced at the panel while you wait for service.
We maintain ATUs throughout Ocala, including newer homes in southwest Ocala along SR 200, Marion Oaks, and properties near Silver Springs where advanced treatment is common. If your ATU tank needs a pump-out, we can do it on the same visit. See our septic inspection in Ocala page if you are buying a home with an ATU.

You should not. The air pump keeps the bacteria alive. Without it, the unit cannot treat wastewater and will start to smell within days.
Yes. Sludge still builds up, though more slowly. Most ATUs need a pump-out every 1 to 3 years, depending on household size and use.
