An ATU alarm usually means one of two things: the water level in the tank is too high, or the air pump has stopped. Check the breaker, listen for the air pump, and cut your water use. If the alarm does not clear within a few hours, or the air pump is silent, call for service.

Aerobic treatment units are common in Ocala, especially on smaller lots and near the springs. They work well, but they have motors, floats, and alarms, and those alarms tend to go off at 2 a.m. Here is what to check before you panic. For regular upkeep, see our ATU maintenance in Ocala service.

What does an ATU alarm mean?

Most ATU control panels have one alarm light and buzzer that covers several problems. The most common are a high water level, a failed air pump, a power problem, or a timer issue on spray systems. The checks below help you narrow it down.

Most panels have a button to silence the buzzer. Silencing it does not fix the problem. The light stays on until the cause is fixed.

6 things to check when your ATU alarm goes off

Only do checks you can do from outside the tank and with the panel closed. Never open the tank or reach into a powered panel.

  1. Check the breaker. Look for a tripped breaker labeled septic, ATU, or aerator in your main panel. Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
  2. Listen for the air pump. It usually sits in a small box or near the tank and makes a steady hum. Silence or a loud rattle points to the pump.
  3. Feel for air. On many units you can feel air at a vent or hear bubbling in the tank. No air means no treatment.
  4. Think about water use. Several loads of laundry, guests, or a leaking toilet can raise the level and trip the high water float.
  5. Look for heavy rain. Storms can push water into older tanks and raise levels for a day or two.
  6. Check the spray heads. On spray systems, heads that do not pop up may mean a pump or timer issue.

What to do while you wait for service

Cut water use to the minimum until the alarm clears or a tech arrives. That keeps the tank from overflowing and gives the bacteria a chance to catch up.

  • Hold off on laundry and the dishwasher
  • Take short showers
  • Do not pour bleach or drain cleaners down the drain
  • Keep kids and pets away from the tank and spray area
  • Do not unplug or switch off the ATU unless the panel is wet or smells burnt

Why regular ATU maintenance prevents alarms

Most alarm calls trace back to parts that wear out slowly: air pump filters, diaphragms, and floats. A scheduled service catches them before they fail. Florida also requires ATUs to have a maintenance agreement and regular inspections.

Regular service visits also measure sludge so you know when the unit needs pumping. ATUs often need a pump-out every 1 to 3 years, which is more often than a regular tank. Our guide on how often to pump a septic tank in Marion County explains why.

Call any time

ATU alarms do not wait for business hours, and neither do we. Call (352) 677-6144 24/7. Tell us what the panel shows and whether the air pump is running, and we will tell you if it can wait until morning.

Quick answers

Is it safe to use the toilet when the ATU alarm is on?

Light use is usually fine for a short time. Cut water use as much as possible and call if the alarm does not clear within a few hours.

Can a power outage set off the ATU alarm?

Yes. After an outage, the alarm may sound until the system resets and the level drops. If it stays on for more than a few hours, call for service.
